Another Tom Sawyer
This book is like reading Tom Sawyer by Twain, Penrod by Tarkington, and sometimes like James Thurber. It is also something like the biography of Thomas A. Edison. A website about this book can be found at: http://members.aol.com/lhchristen/index.htm

Adventures of Tintin: Konig Ottokars Zepter (German Edition of King Ottokar's Sceptre)

Tintin and Struppi solve a royal mystery in Syldavia
"Konig Ottokars Zepter" ("King Ottokar's Sceptre") is an Adventure of Tintin in which our intrepid hero gets to do a lot of deductive reasoning. Certainly there are more actual clues than Hergé usually includes in his mysteries. Tintin encounters Professor Alembik, who studies seals (no, not the friendly little animals but the things you stamp into wax on official papers). This seems a harmless career choice but Tintin finds that both he and the good professor are embroiled with secret agents and a plot against the King of Syldavia. It seems there is a major loophole in the laws of the monarchy, for if the King were to lose possession of King Ottokar's Sceptre, he would lose the right to rule and have to abdicate. This would work to the advantage of the bad guys across the border in Borduria, so it is up to Tintin and Struppi to save the day. They are aided in this endeavor by Sculze & Schultze; to be precise, they endeavor to aid.

"Konig Ottokars Zepter" was produced by Hergé in 1939 and the more you know about Europe on the eve of the Second World War, the more you are likely to see lurking behind the characters and actions of this Tintin adventure. However, it is hard to tell if Hergé is trying to make any sort of a point; certainly during the war it was clear Tintin lived in a different world, so I am loathe to see anything beyond a compelling narrative. This is an actual mystery, where clues need to be solved and mysterious developments need to be explained. On top of all that you can also throw in the ongoing perilous situations that our hero and his faithful terrier find themselves in time and time again in these early adventures. Oh, and there is also Tintin's first meeting with Bianca Castafiore, which is not exactly something I am inclined to celebrate, but that is just me. A very solid offering from Hergé.

A Book for the whole family!
I read "The Adventures of Willie King" to see what it was my grandkids were going to read. My husband was amazed when I could not put the book down. I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter of Willie King's adventures! I found myself being educated (what a sly intention!) and marvously entertained by the humor! Excellent choice for helping children make wise choices, a role model book we so seldom see anymore!

Afi: American Film Institute Catalog of Motion Pictures Produced in the United States: Feature Films 1941-1950 Indexes (American Film Institute Catalog of Motion Pictures Produced in the United sTates)

Authors: Patricia King Hanson, Amy Dunkleberger, and Bill Ivey

Incomparable!
The latest catalog from the folks at the American Film Institute is, almost needless to say, their best yet. Like the two previous catalogs -- 1911-1920, 1931-1940 -- this amazing work covering all American-made feature films of the decade is heavily annotated and a MUST for any researcher. Only one decidedly minor problem, however; the volumes have become almost too large and the Film Institute ought to consider publishing their next decade in four books.

Average review score:

One of the best books written in the English language.
Some of the most beautiful phrases in the English language come from the KJ version of the Bible. Setting the exceptional spiritual message aside, it ranks with Shakespeare's works as one of the greatest works of literature of all time.

Against Cheap Grace in a World Come of Age: An Intellectual Biography of Clayton Powell, 1865-1953 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Studies in Religion, Culture, and Social dEvelopment, Vol. 9)
Published in Paperback by Peter Lang Publishing (05 September, 2002)
Author: Ralph Garlin Clingan
Average review score:

The Conversion of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Ralph Clingan's book illuminates important dimensions of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's conversion, which he attributed to the six months he attended Clayton Powell's Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. This is the most important theological work of the past fifty years. I based my Reformation Day Sermon on the book. It reads like a conversation, very readable, if compressed. I want to see more detailed treatments of some of Powell's sources than allowed in this small volume.
